Charles Allen Long, Jr., quietly has accomplished great deal in life. A man of few words but decisive actions, he has attained a level of professional respect reserved for only a few.
Born in Bessemer, Alabama, Mr. Long pursued his professional career in his home state. “Pap,” as he is known to his friends, earned a civil engineering degree in 1950 from The University of Alabama, where he was elected to Tau Beta Pi.
Following graduation, he joined the firm of Sullivan, Long & Hagerty, becoming chairman of the board and chief executive officer in 1971. While leading the company in its basic construction business, he also diversified its activities by creating other companies to serve as producers of a variety of products under his fourteen U.S. and foreign patents. Among the most notable were AOM Corporation, a supplier of computerized machines for high-volume payment processing and cash management systems that pioneered user-friendly concepts in the use of microcomputers; Synox Corporation, which has developed a process for converting wastewater sludge into a safe fuel or fertilizer product; and Insituform Southeast Corporation (now Enviroq Corporation), a company whose patented technology allows the reconstruction of pipelines without excavation, by building new pipe within old. Mr. Long has received five U.S. patents in this field, from which he has developed an entire family of machines to install “Insitutube” ranging in size from eight inches to sixty-six inches. He is currently involved in robotics development, which will further enhance this process.
At present, Mr. Long is the president, chairman, and chief executive officer of Sullivan, Long & Hagerty and of SCE, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary. He is the secretarytreasurer of both Enviroq Corporation and Synox Corporation. He was chairman and chief executive officer of AOM Corporation until its merger in 1982.
As with many dedicated professionals, Mr. Long has taken the time to care about others in the community. For many years he has been a devoted volunteer in the Birmingham Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which awarded him the Silver Beaver Award in 1989. He is also a former president of the Bessemer Board of Education.
Furthermore, Mr. Long maintains a lively interest in engineering education, working to provide scholarships to promising students and serving as a member of the Alabama Industrial Council of Engineering Education. He is a director of the Capstone Engineering Society at The University of Alabama and was honored by his alma mater in 1988 as a 150th Anniversary Distinguished Engineering Fellow.
Mr. Long is married to the former Barbara Ann Porter, and they have two children and four grandchildren.
