Eric F. Edwards’ career reflects a legacy of servant leadership, technical excellence and lasting contributions to national defense. For more than three decades, he has advanced technologies that strengthened the Army, saved lives on the battlefield and brought recognition to Alabama’s engineering leadership.
Edwards began his civil service career at the age of 19 as a co-op student while studying aerospace engineering at The University of Alabama. He went on to serve 31 years as a U.S. Army civilian employee, culminating as a Tier II member of the Senior Executive Service and director of the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center.
From 2010 to 2014, Edwards led AMRDEC, overseeing more than 3,500 Army employees, 24 soldiers and approximately 6,500 contractors, with an annual program budget of $3 billion. Under his leadership, the center advanced critical technologies that directly enhanced Army capabilities and saved soldiers’ lives. Among these were the modernization of the Multi-Launch Rocket System into the precision-capable Guided MLRS, integration of the Hellfire missile into unmanned aerial systems and development of seven of the 11 new technologies featured on the AH-64E Apache helicopter.
Earlier in his career, Edwards held several key leadership roles, including executive director of the Aviation and Missile Command’s Integrated Materiel Management Center, project manager for the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Project Office and product manager for the UH-60A/L Black Hawk. He also served as deputy product manager for the Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter, Comanche Avionics, and Interoperability and Air Warrior product offices.
Edwards earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from The University of Alabama and a master’s degree in management from the Florida Institute of Technology. He holds Level III certifications in systems planning, research, development and engineering; program management; and acquisition logistics, as well as Level II certifications in business, cost estimating and financial management, and test and evaluation.
His exceptional career has been recognized with the Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service, the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, multiple Superior Civilian Service Awards, the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service, the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara, the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara, the Honorable Order of Saint Michael, Silver and Bronze Awards, and University of Alabama Distinguished Engineering Fellow.
Since retiring from civil service in 2014, Edwards has continued his work in national defense as founder and president of Edwards Strategic Consulting LLC, advising defense organizations and industry partners. His leadership, engineering expertise and dedication to public service continue to leave a lasting impact on Alabama, the Army and the nation.
