John W. Mincy is known throughout the Southeast as a leader in the business, technical, and educational communities. Born in Corinth, Mississippi, Mr. Mincy received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Mississippi State University in 1962, and his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the University of South Alabama in 1972. After working for four years as a technical supervisor for Goodrich- Gulf, he joined the Geigy Corporation in 1966 as a development chemist and began moving up through the ranks as he worked on his engineering degree at South Alabama.
Mr. Mincy was transferred to Ciba-Geigy’s plant in St. Gabriel, Louisiana, in 1969 and was soon promoted to production manager. He became plant manager in 1973 and served in that position until 1979, when he became vice-president for planning and administration in Ciba-Geigy’s Agricultural Division at Greensboro, North Carolina. As vice-president he was responsible for the division’s personnel and administration, planning and financial control, data processing, market research, strategic planning and new business ventures, and logistics.
In 1981, Mr. Mincy was named director of corporate production and engineering services for Ciba-Geigy U.S. Operations in Ardsley, New York. He remained in this corporate position until his transfer to the company’s McIntosh, Alabama, site in 1984, as plant manager. He was named vice-president of the McIntosh operation in 1991.
Mr. Mincy is respected widely for his accomplishments as an engineer and manager, and many also praise him for his dedicated work with professional and civic organizations and causes. He was a founding member of the board of directors for the Business Council of Alabama, and he is a past or present member of the board for other organizations including the Alabama Chemical Association, the Alabama Alliance of Business and Industry, and First Alabama Bank.
In 1988, when a group of Mobile area leaders decided to establish a school of mathematics and science for Alabama students at the secondary level, Mr. Mincy was heavily involved. He provided leadership and momentum to the group, which saw its task accomplished in 1989 when the legislative act authorizing creation of the school was signed into law. He currently is chairman of the board of directors of the Alabama School of Math and Science, and chairman of the school foundation’s board. This activity, perhaps more than any other, signifies Mr. Mincy’s dedication to the future of this state and its children.
H. E. Myers, Jr., chairman of BCM Engi- neers, Inc., said of Mr. Mincy, “From serving as chairman of the Alabama Alliance of Business and Industry to serving as chairman of the Alabama School of Math and Science, he exemplifies the desirable characteristics of those considered for membership in the Engineering Hall of Fame.”
Mr. Mincy is married to the former Katherine Sanders. They have three children, two sons, Jeff and John, and a daughter, Jill.
