Leader in Engineering Excellence
Jonathan H. Pettus, executive director of the Auburn University Applied Research Institute, has dedicated more than three decades to advancing aerospace, defense and national security technologies. A native of Killen, Alabama, Pettus has combined technical expertise with visionary leadership to strengthen the state’s role in national innovation.
Pettus began his career at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville in 1991 as a computer engineer. He rose through the ranks to become Marshall’s associate director, overseeing a $2.5 billion enterprise with more than 6,000 civil service and contractor employees. In this role, he provided strategic direction for engineering, science and program management functions that supported every major NASA mission.
He also served as NASA’s chief information officer in Washington, D.C., where he managed more than $1.4 billion in IT assets and led sweeping reforms that improved the agency’s information systems, cybersecurity and governance. His leadership advanced NASA’s digital infrastructure and set standards for collaboration across centers and federal agencies. Pettus’ distinguished service earned him the Distinguished and Meritorious Presidential Rank Awards, along with multiple NASA medals for leadership, outstanding service and exceptional achievement.
Following his NASA tenure, Pettus joined Huntsville-based Dynetics, later acquired by Leidos, where he served as senior vice president for aerospace, defense and civil programs. He led more than 1,000 employees and managed $500 million in annual revenue, driving major programs in hypersonic weapons systems, space technologies, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Under his leadership, Dynetics became a finalist for the prestigious Collier Trophy and secured key NASA contracts, including participation in the Human Landing System program, reinforcing Alabama’s pivotal role in space exploration and defense innovation.
In 2025, Pettus was named executive director of the Auburn University Applied Research Institute in Huntsville. In this role, he leads faculty, research professionals and students in developing advanced solutions in aerospace, defense, biotechnology and national security. His appointment reflects Auburn’s commitment to expanding applied research partnerships that address critical government and industry challenges.
Pettus earned bachelor’s degrees in computer science, mathematics and history from the University of North Alabama and a master’s degree in computer science from The University of Alabama in Huntsville. He and his wife, Angela, live in Athens, Alabama, and have two children.
Throughout his career, Pettus has exemplified engineering excellence and public service. His leadership and commitment to innovation have strengthened Alabama’s position in national defense, space exploration and technology development, leaving an enduring impact on both the state and the nation.
