Toseph C. Moquin has been professionally involved in engineering in both the academic and business spheres. He is past chairman and CEO of Teledyne Brown Engineering, and before its acquisition by Teledyne was executive vice president and then president of Brown Engineering. He served most recently as interim president of the University of Alabama in Huntsville, through July, 1991.
Moquin, a native of Massachusetts, attended Mississippi State University and received his B.S.I.E. from Washington University in St. Louis, where he also remained for postgraduate work. He is also the recipient of an honorary degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
He is a former member of the board of directors of First Alabama Bank; the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce; the UAH Foundation; the Huntsville Hospital Foundation; the Alabama Industrial Council on Engineering Education; the Business Council of Alabama; and the City of Huntsville Research Park.
Moquin has also served as former chairman of the Federal Task Force Agency; former member of the Executive Advisory Council of Constitution Hall Park; the Birmingham-Southern Endowment Committee for the Senator Howell Heflin Professorship in American Government and Politics; the board of trustees of Birmingham-Southern College; the board of trustees for the Salvation Army; and the board of directors of the Business Council of Alabama.
He also served as a member of the NASA Advisory Council; the Huntsville Alliance for Science Project; and the City of Madison Industrial Board. In addition, he served as former chairman of the Huntsville Vision 2000 Economic Development Committee and as former president of the Valley Foundation at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
A registered professional engineer, Moquin is a member of the Alabama Society of Professional Engineers, the American Defense Preparedness Association, and the Association of the United States Army.
He established the Cummings Research Park in 1961 and led the effort to preserve the continuation of research park zoning in the early 1980’s to Research Park West. He also led the fund drive for the Huntsville Hospital expansion in the major industries division, resulting in more than $600,000 in contributions. Honored by the Alabama Legislature in 1982, he was cited for his leadership on behalf of the economic betterment of the Huntsville area and the state as a whole, and for his example of civic awareness.
He was appointed by Governor George Wallace to serve on the Government Task Force for Economic Recovery for the State of Alabama, as well as the Alabama SuperComputer Network Authority. Most recently he was named to the new Alabama Trust Fund Board, which manages the offshore oil and gas lease funds for the state.
He received the Award for Engineering, Science and Technology Excellence in 1989 from the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce, and was appointed by Mayor Steve Hettinger as a chairperson for the economic development strategy and implementation task force for Vision 2000, the city’s long-range planning project. Winner of the Toastmaster International Communication Leadership Award last year, Moquin was also named to the Alabama Academy of Honor in 1990. He is married to Anita.
