On July 25, 2022, the engineering community was saddened by the death of a dear friend and associate, Mike McCartney of Gadsden. Mike’s passing is especially felt by his fellow members and Directors of the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame. Mike served as a Director 16 years representing the Business Council of Alabama. He was AEHOF chair from 2006-2008 and honored with membership in 2008.
We will miss the clarity of Mike’s words and the thoughtfulness of his responses that for over a decade shaped the direction of the AEHOF in meeting its mission of recognizing outstanding achievement in the engineering profession in Alabama and by Alabamians. Mike mentored new Board members and congratulated inductees always being an advocate for our mission and purpose.
Mike was a leader in the road building industry and the National Center for Asphalt Technology. He supported engineering education through scholarships and by service to his alma mater, Auburn University, from which he received a civil engineering undergraduate degree in 1957 and later an honorary Doctoral degree.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We pledge to celebrate his life as we strive to continue his legacy as an honored member and as a leader in the AEHOF. And to all who knew him, we join their voices in saying “Well done, my true and loyal friend.”
