Zeke Smith is a leader of one of Alabama Power’s largest divisions and is an influential Alabamian.
As Executive Vice President of Alabama Power External Affairs, Smith is responsible for Charitable Giving, Environmental Affairs, Governmental and Corporate Affairs, Public Relations, and Regulatory Affairs. In this role and others, he is an advocate for the people of Alabama, a respected leader in the state’s engineering and business community and committed to improving his company and state.
Smith graduated from Auburn University in 1982 with a degree in industrial engineering and went on to earn his Master of Business Administration from Samford University. He joined Southern Company after graduation as an entry-level engineer for Southern Company Services in Atlanta. In 1984, Smith was offered expanded opportunities with Alabama Power in Birmingham as an engineer and was named a principal engineer in 1994.
After serving in management roles, Zeke was selected as assistant to the executive vice president in 1999 and 2000. After five years of management positions in Regulatory Affairs, he became vice president of Regulatory Services and Financial Planning in 2005.
In 2010, Smith rose to his current position leading External Affairs, where he oversees corporate relations across a wide area of business development. In this role, he also serves as chairman of the board of directors of the Alabama Power Foundation, which provides grant support for non-profit initiatives across the state.
Smith’s extensive background in compliance, government regulations, pricing, engineering economics and corporate strategy have prepared him for his role interacting with federal, state, local industry leaders, regulatory agencies, nonprofit leaders, developers, construction executives and elected representatives.
Smith is active in the community. He is past chair of the Alabama Workforce Council, where he worked with business and industry leaders to develop policy suggestions, inform educators of job needs, and make recommendations to agencies and elected officials to ensure Alabama’s skilled workforce remains competitive. In 2018, he spearheaded the Success Plus initiative, at the request of the Governor, to link Alabamians to training opportunities aligned with high-demand careers identified by industry.
His service to Alabama includes membership on the boards of directors of the Governor’s Labor- Management Conference, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the Bryant-Jordan Foundation and the Birmingham Business Alliance. He has served on the board of the Business Council of Alabama, the state’s College and Career Ready Taskforce and the Tornado Recovery Action Council of Alabama. He is a trustee for Samford University and serves numerous philanthropic organizations and civic initiatives across the state.
At his alma mater, Smith serves on the Auburn Alumni Engineering Council and is past chair of the public relations committee. In 2018, he was honored by Auburn as an Outstanding Alumni for Industrial and Systems Engineering. In addition, he serves on the advisory council of the Charles D. McCrary Institute, which focuses on improving the security and operations of the nation’s infrastructure through research and advanced technologies.
Smith is a 2014 graduate of Leadership Alabama. In 2017, Smith was honored with the Impact Award by the Business Education Alliance for his commitment to education and workforce development, and for the past 6 years Yellowhammer News has named Smith one of the “50 most influential people in Alabama”.
Zeke and his wife, Darlene, live in Trussville. They have three children and four grandchildren.
